I’m writing this letter to give you a heads up on how cedar shoals students are for the most part. First of your best bet, is to not approach the class all hard nosed and strict. That’s just going to cause mayhem from the get go, but also do not go in there acting too nice because then that gives the lead way for them to run over you for the rest of the year. So you have to be a little bit in between.
Your also going to have to learn to take jokes, or either joke back with your students if the began to pick on you. It’s nothing personal, just a way to make the class go by faster and not be bored. Also, only raise your voice when its necessary. I say this because when a teacher yells for no reason or when the situation is’nt that serious it just makes the class look at you as if your just trying to be mean for no apparent reason.
One other thing I think I should let you know is no matter how difficult a student is, never give up on them. I’ve had numerous teachers like that, and I wish they hadn’t had giving up on me. I say this because I feel like if they give up on me, I might as well give up on myself. You will earn a lot of respect for not giving up on a student. That’s why I’m thankful till this day for the teachers who could’ve gave up on me but chose not too. So there are a few tips of becoming a great new teacher.

Looking past the negative by Porsha Watkins
Welcome to the school of drama high. From fights every week to getting your belongings stolen I advise ANY teacher coming to work here to be prepared to put up with the bull crap. Students will talk to you any kind of way. Especially the seniors: they feel like they been here longer than you have, and they can talk to you however they wish. Make sure you get used to the cigarette smoke because you always smell that going towards any bathroom. Be aware of the students not coming to class, being late, skipping, cursing you out, and so going on. Your class is going to be empty after lunch because students don’t like to come back after lunch. They think they can just wonder the halls, and be ready to go home because they done ate well and be dreadfully sleepy. Senior are going to feel like they run the school. Not only seniors are terrible but, freshmen’s fight almost every day. They feel like they are tough and be wanting to show out basically be the class clown. The good things about Cedar Shoals high school is that it’s a good school, they have good academic’s, sports, good teacher, people always motivating and encouraging you to stay focus. The teachers are willing to help you pass. For example if you have a 70 in the class, they give you make-up and make sure that you pass there class. The have excellent after-school program any work they you have to make-up or missed a day out of school you do it after school. They also provide you will a snack. We have a wonderful graduation coach Ms. Hudson she makes sure everything is on track with you and your classes. In general cedar shoals has its good side and bad but overall it is a good school, hey I went there. I’m graduating on time, got all my stuff together thanks to the people encouraging me and teachers staying on my back. I wish all the teacher the best of luck just be aware of the childish children but generally the great programs and new teachers you get to meet.
Patience is a virtue by Paul Simpson
So, you are new to this school. First thing: welcome and good luck. Now, I have a little bit of advice for you. There are a lot of things to say about the students. There are some things you should not try to do with students. Also, there are two types of students, as I classify them: good and bad. I know that is a basic generalization, but it is rather accurate in my opinion. And, most importantly, don’t lose your patience.
One could probably write a book on high school students, but I will narrow it down. There are three basic, but important, things to know about students. Most are lazy. I would suggest giving them an incentive to work, because passing just is not enough sometimes. For example, something like this: “At the end of this course, I will have a surprise for anyone who passes.” Also students hate tests. They absolutely abhor them, especially when they are not multiple choice tests. And, finally, they prefer group work. Students tend to do better in group work than normal work. I believe that the reason they work better in groups is because they get to associate and put ideas together to get it done.
There are a few things you should not try to do with students. Do not try to make them learn. Some just refuse to pay attention and pass. Do not try to talk over them. Unless you happen to have a microphone or a bullhorn, they will be louder. Also, do not try to scare them by threatening to write them up. Ask them to stop doing whatever it is they are doing. If they do not stop, write them up.
There are two main types of students: good and bad. This is a little bit of a broad generalization, but quite accurate. Good students are the ones who do their work, do not give… ...you a hard time, work hard, and do not just sit and talk the whole period. Most students are good students until they are placed with certain students. Bas students are the ones who constantly talk and cause a distraction. They never work and expect to earn a good grade. Do not punish a whole class just because there are a couple of bad students in there.
And, finally, be patient. Do not lose your temper. It is easy to do with some students. Do not give up on them. I have seen teachers just give up and let the students do whatever they want. Also, always remain calm. Remain patient and do not lose your temper. I know this is obvious, but I feel it is relevant to say.

Relax ... by John Gresham
I wish that I would have listen to what my teachers told me when I first enter high school. They told me the most important thing in school is to get your grades and make sure that that you pay attention, come to school everyday. But me I wanted to be Mr. Bad ass and just play around all the time and just settle for a C for a grade in my class all I wanted to do is pass the class and let it be over with all that came back in hunted me though when I got In the 12th grade it Is very hard for me to get in school and I struggle everyday thinking to myself wishing that I would have paid attention in school. I think some of the rules in high school is a little harsh though and if they was to changed some of them school would be ran way more smoothly. Like I think students should be able to leave and go get them some food at lunch time instead of having to eat the lunch room food everyday. And another thing is that everybody in high school is partly grown so ion think no teacher should be able to take your phone when its out because it could be some very important going on with your family that you really need to know bout and if you don’t got your phone it really wouldn’t be a way for you to find out. I think teachers should make closer relationships with all there students because if a student feel loved he will want to come to your class everyday and make sure that all his work get done and does whatever you need for them to do. Also being mean or writing a student up is not the only way to settle a student sometimes students just need someone to talk because there parents at home don’t really pay them attention.
Put your foot down by Carl Clemons
For the new teachers that are coming to cedar shoals I warn you to try and find another school. The reason I say this is because the students at cedar shoals are very rude and don’t a lot of manners. The ones that do and are good students will make your time here worth the while. A lot of these students are actually good and very smart but you have to force it out of them. The reason I said that is because these students don’t like to read and do any work and love to walk around in the hallways.
From day one you have to put your foot down and set the tone for the whole school year. If you let them run you the first day they will do it for the rest of the year. I know my class took advantage of our student teacher a lot! We did work almost every other day. We always gave her a hard time not because we didn’t like her just because she was a little older than us so we really didn’t see her as an adult like most of the older teachers. You also need to set your rules and how you grade your work the first day too. Don’t let students turn work in late because they will get very use to it and never turn it in on time! Our student teacher let us do this and take points off our grade and we didn’t care so much that we accepted this. Our work ethic became so poor that a lot of students stopped doing the work all together. The students started worrying about the grade near the end of the year when they started thinking about graduation. For you to be a really good teacher you should never let your students slack off and give them a lot of chances because the kids at Cedar Shoals High School will take advantage of you!

Students are capable by Tay Browner
We have bright students who is capable of learning . I think you have made the right choice of choosing your job. At times our student might get out of hand and want to fight an crap but there’s no worries for that because we have a big security team that stands up for our school. The reason for saying this is a good school is because I have been going to cedar shoals every sense 9th grade. We have great opportunities that give students and teachers some type of leeway. Not only is the teachers are teaching the students but the teachers are also learning from some of the student because no one is perfect in life. All of the teachers and administrative has been on me every sense 9th grade trying to put me on track with my grades and academic behavior with others. I am please to say that I fill comfortable with the student and the teachers that are surrounding me hear. Even though we do not have a big graduated class the teachers are working with us to help us get on track in order to walk on time.
Getting stricter by A.J. Davenport
When you’re a teenager you think you’re grown because you can take care of yourself. And you simply don’t want to be told what to do. So for all of the upcoming administration I have advice for you. Because trying to keep a whole heap of teen in line isn’t easy at all.
Just because the students know right from wrong doesn’t mean that they will do what right. Students know that going to the restroom shouldn’t take any more than five minutes but the student at cedar take advantage of hallway passes. Next year there should be limited hallway passes per student, around two a week per class. To raise the amount of minutes students are in class. There should be strict rules on hallway passes immediately.
Another issue that should be dealt with is the tardies and absences. Every since they changed the policy from eight absences no credit student have been running wild with the amount of absences. If teacher notice that the same student isn’t showing up to class teacher should make a phone call home to ask the parents are they aware of these absences. So I suggest strict act on absences.
The last problem I should address is the smoking on government property. There have been a number of occasions were marijuana smoke and cigarette smoke has been fuming from the restroom. This is a major problem and should be handled immediately. Security should be on every wing of the school. It may sound drastic but this should help tremendously.
AS you can see the tides are starting to change. Someone has to bring cedar back to the original tradition it started with. And the upcoming administration has the power to change all of these problem surrounding cedar shoals. Here is the majority of the problem you have the power to change everything.

Be supportive by Myrtisa Strowder
As a new teacher at Cedar Shoals High School you should expect different ways that students learn. To keep children interested in learning you have to try different things to make the lesson plans easier to understand. Having more project groups and playing the question game. If the students understand what they are learning they are willing to do the work. Another thing you need to know that if your students feel like you are supporting them in everything they do. They will most likely do their best. If the student is not getting enough support they will just give up on everything that they are doing. Making sure that the student is on task, and when he /she keep messing up you help them get back on track. Good support will bring out the best in all students. Never be a pushover! Do not let students run over you, because when you are teaching they will always disrupt your class and cause other student not to learn. They will be talking while you are talking or either texting while you are trying to teach. Your student loose respect for you because you let them do what ever they want to do. Always remember to set boundaries this is for your students to understand there are rules to be followed. Such as be prepared for and stay on task. And this is for you to know that there are standards to be met. You should never show you have a favorite student. If a student sees that you are showing favoritism that will cause the rest of the student to disrespect or act out towards you. They want do the work that you give them, and when you tell them to do something they say a smart comment back. Student should never feel like teachers have favorites. The best teachers are the ones who cause students to be successful in life.

My years here I have had two principals. I know some became principals to make the school a better place or to just help the school overall look towards the board of education. But I think that as a student I can give you some pointers to help you be a better principal then all the other.i know that being in your shoes can bring many responsibililty that will be hard to do some times. But if you follow what im about to tell you, you will do just fine.
To begin you have to get on the good side of all the students and the teachers. Doing so you can have a good repuation, and have respect. To do this you can do may things like make more pep rallys, and more events . but if you do don’t seem too anxious or soft, if they do them to bad for you. If you do these then the first impresion will be very merable.
Next you need to make sure that you go aruond the school and make sure that the school is runing correctly. Make sure that the reacher are teaching and the students are learing. Doing this will show that you have interest in the what goes down iin the school. Next you should always make sure that the rules sucha s tardies, and rude behavior are delt with as neccesary. Doing this will show that you like to have funa but you have a seriuos side.
With these you will be very succesful at your job . maybe be the best ever, but lets see how it goes the first few months. Remember that this job can be fun if you do the right things that need to be done. Have fun and enjoy your stay at cedar shoals. How to see you in the paper like the first principal, but doing something good.

Decrease behavior problems by Jose R.
Okay new principle of Cedar shoals. This school isn’t really hard to handle. Im guessing, but you’re going to have to watch out mostly with the freshmen’s cause in year 2010-2011they kept on trying to fight everybody-even seniors. They’re crazy little kids & think they know what they are doing so you’re going to have to keep an eye on them. A good way is to have teachers to be more secure about their students & have securities checking the halls & out in the parking lots. And more cameras should be installed. I think this would decrease the chances of students doing stuff they aren’t supposed to do.
When I first came to cedar we had a different principle. When he was here we had a lot of vending machines that sold Gatorades and sodas. The cafeteria had some coolers wit drinks you could buy. The food was a lot different and tasted better. The pizza was good; now its to burnt, hard, it isn’t as good as it used to be. I think you might have to do some changes again cause school would be better for students how it was. Before students were more calm, but this year the school was crazy. A lot of behavior problems, freshman’s fighting all the time & teachers were being disrespected all the time in class. Students just walk out the class & cuss teachers out. A lot of students got caught skipping, and some got caught with weapons. The behavior problems have to be decreased. Teachers would have to be more strict in order to have a lot of students succeed also.

Never give up by Silvano Ramos
As a student my point of view towards the teachers would be difficult because there are many students and each one has different strengths and weaknesses. The best way to interact with students is in a visual way and to give many examples to make them understand what to do and bring out many ideas. Showing many videos could also give them many ideas because as a visual learner I would learn more, but not all students are the same, so that means trying out many other activities would be the best way besides just letting them copy of the book. When working with students the teacher should make sure to see where every ones at and work with them individually.
Bad examples of bad teaching would be only working only with the student you know how to teach because you should know how to teach every single student. My advice to the new teachers would be to not be too strict or too fun: just be in the middle and in that way the students will respect you more and have fun. You would have to keep your class under control and make sure everyone is doing what they’re suppose to also many activities in the class like projects, group work, or individual work helps know the way they work and what ideas they can come up with. Every student is different so you should try different methods to know them better in their learning.
Never give up on a student and encourage them to do their best. Letting them know that you’re there to help helps them out by counting on you to help.

Students learn in many ways by Janice Hall
Being a new teacher at Cedar Shoals High School, you should understand how students learn and how they act. Students learn and act in many ways some students learn more one on one with the teacher or either by their selves. I remember this new teacher who didn’t know how to control her kids because she learned in different ways, so she had to find out how all the students act and learn then she could start handling them better.
Some students just get on teachers’ nerves because they are new. They try to give you all a reason to quit or let them do what they wanted to do. Like I had a new teacher and my classmates wanted to give her a hard time just because she was new. They were interrupting her when she was trying to talk and they were cursing at her just saying all types of things. Until one day she quit being so nice and started acting like she was the teacher. Then all the students started showing her respect and listen to her.
New teachers learn something new every day: either something good or bad. Students also tell new teachers things that they think they should know. Like personal things or problems that they have. I remember when I became so close to a new teacher because she knew where I was coming from: what type of environment and things like that. She did so much for me and helps me not to think about the things I went through. so as I say to these new teachers, next year is to not let these kids take advantage of you all never let a student do what they want to do because then they gone think you soft as in not being tough. They will never listen to you until you put your foot down. I hope you all teachers the best in what you all do. Always understand what a student is saying to you because it might be something to them that is real important. I wish you all the good luck and hope you have a wonderful year.

Not one but many by Alex Smith
To the Incoming Principal of Cedar Shoals High School,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and share my excitement about your appointment as the new principal at Cedar Shoals High School. The Clarke County School District has a reputation of excellence. I feel fortunate to have an individual as yourself become actively involved within a school culture focused on student learning, a commitment to high expectations, innovation and collaboration.
First off, I would like to congratulate you on your promotion and commend you for assuming the role of one of the highest positions in American education. However, with high authority means a bunch of expectations. Cedar Shoals has its share of violence and “troubled children” (as do many, if not all, public schools). Be sure to expect hearing about fights and threats of fights within this school. This is simply the student’s way of imposing their desire to demand respect in the eyes of their peers, but hopefully could be solved or prevented before they happen when you officially become new principal of Cedar.
By saying this, you understand that Cedar Shoals is educational home to some individuals who suffer from many issues and conflicts in their lives. This is, of course, high school; the road that leads the student body to success in their future. Many freshmen and some upper classmen may struggle with the new environment or with new teachers and students that will become actively involved in their lives on a weekly basis. There are bound to be oppositions and discord occurring with students and teachers or students with other students – that’s common sense.
There is a slogan that former principal, Dr. Ingrid Gilbert established in Cedar that I believe should be removed. “1 Cedar.” Sure, this title describes Cedar Shoals students as being “one family” or “one unity,” but considering another person’s differences and accepting them for the person they are instead of the person you want them to be (or act like) should be what mature high school students (as we all should be) are expected. To make a slogan that basically rubs in the face of students saying, “This is what we are.” And then, having the student disrespect teachers and students regardless seems morbid in my opinion. In entirety, what I mean is that it seems a bit disappointing leaving a school that had to post up a slogan in order to show students “this is how we operate, and if you don’t like it, you’ll have to figure out a method in which you have to learn to live with it.”
I, as well as the rest of the graduating class of 2011, thank you and wish you the best of luck as you commandeer our high school.

Be responsible and respectful by Marco Gomez
I just want to say that you have just in a position where you must be very responsible and respectful of what you are doing. You are in charge of what the students and administrators are doing and what they are supposed to be doing. There is no room for mistakes in your position as the principle of Cedar Shoals High School. If you are a immature person or careless then this position is not for you so please move out the way for someone who is ready for this kind of responsibility. Students are not like the students at Clarke Central, Ombudsmen, or any other school for that matter. These students are much more responsible, but at the same time do not have any respect for people they do not want to associate with.
Students here are going to be the biggest challenge in your career as an educator. This students can be your be friend if you treat them right. Or can be your worst nightmare comes true if you do not give them their respect. These students will smoke, drink, and skip class every opportunity they get. Students will con their way out of doing their work or even try to negotiate to try to get a free grade. There are students who do very well in their class and will try do get ahead of the other students so they can later lie to the teacher and blame it on the other not so bright students. Then there are the students who do well in their classes without any problems. The students that get to their classes on time and do not give problems are the students who will be given the most privileges in class and some will try to abuse it.
Drugs are a major part of the students’ life at Cedar Shoals. 5 out of 10 people at Cedar Shoals are involved in drugs in some sort of way. Some of the students sell drugs, or do them at school. The main drug at Cedar Shoals is marijuana, then cocaine, and last meth. Students will have weapons on them as long as they have drugs in their position. The drugs are the main cause of students not reaching their full potential in the academics. The majority of students will not stop doing drugs to do better in their classes, but they will try to slow down so they can catch up in their classes. I have drugs stop my friends’ high school career, whether it was selling them or doing them but either way they will affect you in a negative way.
Gangs at Cedar Shoals are a major issue. 4 out of 10 students are involved in gang activity. There are many types of gangs at Cedar Shoals like crips, bloods, GD, and sur 13. The students who are involved in gangs most likely do not finish their high school career or graduate late. In the past there have been many fights due to gang rivals, or disputes. In 2008 there was a huge riot involving Hispanics and African Americans due to gangs but soon evolved into racial disputes. The females are more likely to get into an altercation than the males. The majority of fights at Cedar Shoals are young females causing drama by starting false rumors. At the same time there fights due to non school related problems.
The fellow teachers are also the main obstacle that students face. There are many great teachers that really help students succeed and turn them into very responsible young adults. There are also teachers who fail students due to personal problems that have absolutely nothing to do with school. I have had experience with teachers who have failed me and fellow class pates due to these ridicules problems. The teachers who try to get in good with the administrators and principle are the ones who will use their power and influence on the principle to fail students. The teachers who dedicate their time and selves to students are the ones who really are educators and not just a person trying to get their money and leave without a trace.
I have just told you everything there is about Cedar Shoals and its regulations. If you think that this is an easy school to get along with then you are sadly mistaken. You must do what is right for the school and its students instead of the teachers and the administration. Be ready for the biggest paying career but also the most difficult one yet

Be prepared by Shakerra Pattman
As a graduating high school senior I have seen it all. I have a lot to recommend to the new upcoming teachers. Students at Cedar Shoals can be very hard to handle. So if you’re a new, upcoming teacher just remember that you can’t be a pushover. You have to run your class from day one. Always be prepared for anything in every class. The reason I say this is because you may have students who have conflicts towards each other and a fight could break out. There’s always one student that seeks for the attention. They’re mostly referred to as class clown. Every class has a class clown and at times it can be annoying. I remember when I was in this classroom there was always this one boy who would come in and try to get everyone’s attention. He would jump around the classroom and act like a retard. We would try not to pay him any attention thinking he would stop but he just continued to act as if no one was there.
Also you should set good disciplinary rules and go by them. I remember my tenth grade year in high school. I had this nice teacher, who was a pushover. On top of that she didn’t really set boundaries for her classroom. With that being said she had no control what so ever. Students would talk to her any kind of way and were very disrespectful. So as I stated before run your classroom from the start.
More good advice for the new upcoming teachers is to make the work/ classes more interesting. You should plan the work as if you were a student. It would help them learn better and keep them more focused. So that way it can still be fun but educational at the same time. So too my new upcoming teachers focus more on helping the students get out of school instead of bringing them down. They may be hard to handle but I’m sure you knew exactly what you was getting yourself into before you became a teacher. Just make sure you are well prepared. Good luck and have a great year.

Fun isn't everything by Javante Risper
Dear Future Teachers,
I would like to say welcome to Cedar Shoals. Some of the students here are as bad as you heard, but not all of them. My advice to you is to be hard on your students at all times. I know some of them will think that you’re being a butthole but I and you both know that you’re not trying to be that.
It’s cool to do something’s that’s fun but not all of the time. You would be doing your job but you wouldn’t be giving your students the kind of knowledge that they need. If a student act up please do feel free to write that student up. If you don’t then that student will try to run over you in each and every way that he/she can. When you have a date to meet on your assignment or project make sure you keep that date and if they miss that date then take points off or count it as a zero.
Help your students the best way you can because students do lie on their teachers about certain stuff and say things like you didn’t tell them how to do the work, you didn’t tell them that they had a assignment, you didn’t give them the assignment, they asked you for help but you didn’t give it to them because you want them to fail, and more stuff like that. Don’t be afraid to talk to your students about things that are going on. If you feel like something’s going on with that person and its affecting them try to talk to them about it and if they let you know what’s going on then keep it between you and that person. The whole world doesn’t have to know about what’s going on in that person personal life. Let that person know that you’re not trying to be nosey and you were just concerned about them because you want them to better themselves. Try to gain a connection with them. You have some students that will talk to their teachers and let their teacher in on some stuff that their friends don’t even know about them. Blogs are a good way for you to try and connect with your students. I got the idea from my teacher because she did one with my class and I found out that it was very interesting so I’m giving this to you. I also found out that more people open up with things like that because that’s the only way that they can express themselves without being judge. Don’t talk to your students about drugs that you do if you do drugs. Hopefully you don’t do drugs so, I was saying just in case you do. Make your students work because whether they go to the next grade or graduate lies in your hands. If a student wants to be stubborn then let them be that. They will sooner or later straighten up because they don’t want to see their friends doing well and they aren’t. Don’t be nice to the students who misbehave because if you do then they would be getting more privileges then the other students who do their work. I’m glad that you took the time out to read this and take my advice because I really couldn’t find any advice for a teacher because I have never been in a teacher position, so I’m just speaking on what I have seen.

Don't be a pushover by Shateria Robinson
Are you a new teacher at Cedar Shoals? I believe that all new teachers have some what of a hard time on controlling there kids because they really don’t know what to expect from them. Sometimes I think that new teachers have a hard time controlling their student because they are kind of nervous at first and act like a cat got their tongues. I believe that if you are a new teacher entering Cedar Shoals you just have to let them know the first day that you’re not a pushover. Because if you come off like a push over the first day they will run over you for the rest of the school year, that’s just how students take advantage of there teachers. I’m not saying that you have to come off mean about the situation but just let them know that you’re not going to let them talk to you any kind of way and you’re not going to let them run all over you. Nor am I saying that Cedar Shoals is such a bad school that the students just don’t know how to act. I’m just saying that no matter what school you go to if you let a student do you any kind of way then they are going to do it, its just life. Mainly students are always trying to get out in the hallway (like me) and if your one of those teachers that let your students do what they want to do then of course they are going to do it because they know that they aren’t going to be any consequences behind the situation. Especially if you just let them just walk out of class they will be sure to tell the principle or any administrator if they get caught that you didn’t say anything about it, then you will be in trouble. Do you really want to lose your job because your students don’t know how to be have, or because you act like you don’t know how to control your students. No! Then there are some teachers that are just to damn strict, I understand that they are rules that you have to follow but you don’t have to be so strict about them. Most strict teachers be the teachers that get cussed put the most. But like any other teacher I believe every new teacher will get use to the environment and be a great teacher!
Use games by Diamondny Colbert
The school has some what of a good environment from the looks of it, but really I would say scary. The faculty is easy to get along with; we have some good teachers. My four years of high school can be viewed as a senior class teacher or freshman. Those years are the worst. Freshman year is all about being childish, playing all the time, talking etc. Basically we don’t take high school serious in the beginning. Senior year everyone’s considered real grown, most of the students have seniorities so bad that they don’t want to do any work. Taking a job at cedar shoals is just like taking a major risk. You have to have courage and patience to put up with all the mess. You have to be dedicated to your job, you cant let the students take advantage of you because they will try to especially if you’re a new teacher. Sometimes I can just see the expressions on a teachers face and they just feel like giving up.
But all about the school isn’t just negativity, its fun if make it fun. A good teacher can survive but they have to keep us wild children occupied. A good way to keep your students occupied is to make games like jeopardy to help study. A good way to award your students is to bring them gifts or prizes then that will encourage them to do more work.
If I was my decision to be a teacher at Cedar Shoals I would because I really think I could handle the students because I have had a good experience at my school and I see what different students like to do.

Be yourself by Brandon Glenn
My advice to the new teachers next year is don’t forget to be yourself and show them your personality. Just be you and take a deep breath and relax. My best advice for new teachers is to always have a back up plan, be consistent, firm, and fair. When the bell rings come out teaching.
If you don’t know, ask. It is about the kids, and the kid’s parents are important. Stay organized, enjoy your job, It is the best job in the world. Don’t try to be perfect. Remember; you know more than the students do. Try to sit in another teacher’s class and see what you learned. Finally, you will get better don’t panic.
Curriculum can wait. Spend time building community and relationships in your classroom. Once you do that and establish routines, you can fly through the curriculum. Be prepared. Have a plan for discipline infraction from day 1. Follow it to the letter for the first week. Kids will get the message that you say what you mean and mean what you say. Call the parents during the first week to introduce yourself and you will get a feel for how supportive and responsive parents will be.
Also try to make time to call for good things. That way when a negative phone call must be made, you already have a report with the parents.

New rules by Jose D.
So I hear you’re going to be Cedar Shoals new principal starting next semester. Congratulations on your new job. I hope you do well and enjoy your time here. It’s a great community to be around; all the teachers and students are great. Let me give you a few pointers that should help make your job easier though because they are hard to please.
The school could use a rule makeover which should include rules that give students the right to use their cell phones in class as long as they are on vibrate, if they choose to use their phones and miss out on information given out by the teacher its all their faults and no other person should be blamed. Another rule new rule to make would be getting rid of all the random hall sweeps. It’s not fair to the people who get late to class because of an actual reason instead of just choosing to “chill” in the hall.
Seniors should be allowed to leave campus during their lunch time if they choose to do so but cannot bring food into the building. There should be more fun activities such as planning out more pep rallies, talent shows, video game tournaments, class field trips, etc. School lunches could be better prepared and there should be more choices rather than having the same thing every week.
Cedar Shoals will be a great school if all of these rules and regulations were to be applied. The four years I’ve attended this school there has been two different principals. I think that with the advice given you will be the best principal this school has ever seen and will be sure to keep your job. Enjoy yourself and make sure to keep the students happy.

Make Class Interesting by Jaleal Pittman
In my life, I have had many different teachers that I have liked and disliked. I have personally faced some good teachers and also bad teachers. I had a teacher that had a good teaching method but the teacher did not make it interesting, and I was very bored. I was causing big disruptions and causing the other students to have problems learning the materials. I thought the teacher should not just stand up in front of the class. She did not let the class talk when we was finished our work. I was always sent to the principal’s office. However, the principal knew that I was a good student but I could not change the class because that was the only teacher teaching that subject. My mother was getting many calls at work and home informing her that I was acting up in the class. My mother did not allow that and she got feed up. She said that I wouldn’t like all the teachers that I will have in my life so I needed to grow up and do the work. Even though I ended up failing the class and had to take the class the next year, I learned that I can not let the teacher and her teaching methods cause me to do stupid things.
I have learned that I need to strive to do my best even if the teacher does not have a good lesson plan. The advice I give for current or future teachers is to have a more interesting class and to get the students more involved with the lesson. You can also have your class do more hands-on assignments instead of you just standing there in front the class and giving a long lecture. You should not only teach things from the past but also things from the present because I like to learn the past but I also want to see how the past relates to the present. I also think you should allow students to talk after they finish their work because its makes the class more interesting.

Teachers by Shantara Morrison
Teachers you are doing a good job but what concerns me is that you all are losing sight of what is really important. I think that you should teach your class and to be aware of your senior and I am not saying to give all your attention to the seniors but most of it because if you succeed with your seniors then your other lower classmen will succeed also with thanks and a big help to you. They will graduate and come back and visit you and be able to say that teacher tried her best to help me and is a good teacher. She can help you achieve your short term goal which is to graduate. Teachers also if you have a class with disruptive students don’t get mad or make it hard for other students who are actually learning. Also, when a student comes into your class with an attitude, don’t give them the same attitude back even though you would like to. Teachers, treat that student like he is someone whether you want to or not. Students may act mean and not caring, but I believe they do care. Most of the problems are caused because the teacher can make a wrong assumption or maybe a right one but either way the story may be relayed to administrators wrong. Teachers, don’t make other students pay for what that one student has said or done to you, because you are the grown up in the situation.
Teachers, basically, I am saying don’t let little things get to you and know your students. Be a friend, teacher, and someone they can depend on to help in and out of school but don’t get too familiar. I am about to graduate thanks to myself and others who helped me get this far. I would like to thank all the teachers that helped me get to where I am and I hope to have them in the future to guide me. Teachers, keep doing good but also try to be better because there is always room for improvement

The Tardy Policy by Kierra Beasley
Administrators shouldn’t count the tardy policy because some students may have a good grade, like a B average, but they fail the class. That isn’t fair to the student because if they passed the class but have too many tardies, then they have to retake the class over. Students shouldn’t have to go through the appealing absent program.
My sophomore year I needed a computer class to go on my college prep seal and my class was downstairs during third period. The class I had before that one was gym and the gym is in a separate building. Almost everyday I was late and before you know it my tardiness was adding up. When the final exam came, I was making a ninety-five. I passed the exam with a ninety. I tried to talk to the teacher to see if I could get my grade. I couldn’t because I couldn’t appeal any of the tardies; there weren’t any excuses.
I learned from this experience that administrators should be more understanding. I think that if you have a ninety or higher in the class and you have tardies that you can explain, the school should let you have your grade/credit whether you were late or not. As long as you learn in class, it shouldn’t matter if you’re late or not. Administrators want us to be more mature but they add up tardies. I only think this policy should apply to freshmen and sophomores, because they are still learning.
Freshmen need this policy because it allows them to learn not to be late to important things such as a job or their classes. Seniors don’t really need this policy if they are on task in all of their classes because they have experienced everything.

EOCT by Raziel Alegria
Throughout my freshman year I had a lot of experiences hearing teachers tell one another about how to teach their classes, and they could never come to a right conclusion. The best way they figured was the EOCT test scores. That is a big disappointment to some students because they may be passing the classes with low C averages, and the E.O.C.T is 15% of your final grade. If you fail that test, you fail the class. But if you have a high F you can pass the class if you did good on the test. That is very hard to do to some people. A lot of people fail their classes because of the E.O.C.T. I know I did.
Another of my personal experiences was when I had to move to Central and be there until I could move back to the east side. I was really nervous at first about going to a new school and meeting new people, starting all over. The teachers over there were pretty nice. Some were mean looking but nice. I did not run into one that did not say good morning or asked how I was doing. After all it wasn’t so bad I but still wanted to come back to Cedar to see all my friends and teachers.
What I learned from this experience was that teachers sometimes can help each other by giving their teaching plans to one another. I also learned that you should be thankful of what you have, and you should do well in all your classes because you don’t know what they are going to come up with next to supposedly help us pass our classes and our Georgia high school graduation exams. But they don’t even know what’s going to be on it so it’s kind of a blind sight for all of us.

Getting to Know Students by Rashad Dalton
Fall of the year 2005. I came into high school with high standards of playing varsity football for the following fall season. Working out all summer with the older guys and getting to know them wasn’t too hard, because of what I had achieved in middle school playing sports. The older guys knew that I was going to compete for everything I earned on and off the field. High school principals and coaches knew that I was willing to be a part of the program. Before the ninth grade, I was considered the “problem child” of the school. All throughout school, the teachers and I didn’t see things eye to eye. They had their opinions about things and I had mine. I was never really willing to be wrong, so I argued, cursed, and disobeyed them. The high school teachers knew that I was going to argue for what was right, but we really didn’t have any problems much, so it never got to that point. Senior year of 2008, I transferred from my hometown school to a bigger school just across the county line. Enrolling into Cedar Shoals High School wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to do. Medical shots along with other requirements had to be completed before I could attend school.
Throughout those things I learned that I have to get more things done on my own. Signing up for extra classes, turning in attendance waiver forms, overall just getting things done that needed to be done. Taking care of college decisions on my own made me realize that it’s time to face the reality of life and that it’s time to grow up.
I think before teachers judge students on their appearance. They should actually give the students a chance to express the way they are. I think that teachers should stay on the students pretty hard so that the kids won’t think that it’s easy after high school. They should prepare the kids for things that are more real to life. Most of the students go to school to see their friends not to learn, but there are some that care about their education, so the teacher should actually teach about everyday things and the requirements for college in case they do decide to go to college. It’s the teacher that determines a student’s education. I think that is a valuable thing in life, so I think that the teacher should take that very seriously, because education is the key to success in life. Without it, we could find ourselves locked out of life. Teachers should open up their plans, sit down, and get to know the students, so that they’ll get an idea of what that kid wants out of life.

Class Takeover by Marie Smith
Coming into the 9th grade was one of the most exciting things that has happened in my life. It made me feel as though I had achieved so much because I was finally in high school. My first three classes were all taught by teachers who had years of experience so they knew every trick in the book. There was definitely no running over any of them. It was the last class of the day. I walked in the class and I heard the heavens sing. Finally a teacher that looked young enough to be my sister. I already knew this was going to be my favorite class. As all the students filled the class, I noticed a nervous look on the teacher’s face. All my friends and other classmates noticed it too. As soon as the bell rang we all began to just talk like our lives depended on it. The teacher tried her best to quiet us down, but her soft tone phased nobody in the class. Even though it may have not seemed like it, we were just as nervous that first day as she was. The only difference is she showed it on her face everyday. This happened everyday for about a month. Excessive talking, walking around the class, and basically just doing what we wanted. By the middle of the semester we had formed a routine, and there wasn’t anything our teacher could do about it. She was scared of us and it was obvious. There were times she would “yell” at us but every time that happened she was quickly shut up by a student. Now those “yelling” moments didn’t even exist. It soon got to the point where we ruled the class and the teacher just sat there. By the end of the semester, she had completely given up on trying to get us to cooperate. On the last day of school we all noticed a change in her attitude. She seemed a lot more happy and alive. We all knew why. That day when the bell rang for class to begin, we were all sitting quietly in our seats. Our teacher was both shocked and upset. It was the last day of school and we had finally done what she’d been wanting us to do since the beginning of the semester. She gave us a twisted look, blew her breath, and just sat down. We had accomplished the take over of the class, and our teacher knew it.
Most new teachers don’t know what to expect coming into a new school, whether it is elementary, middle, or high. The environment’s different, and you don’t really know anybody. Advice to the teachers…STAY STRONG!! One of the worst things you could do is go into a classroom and show that you’re scared and probably don’t know what the heck you’re doing. That gives the students a reason to run over you and take control of your class. Go in strong with a confident smile on your face. Don’t go in with an attitude because that’ll make the students shut down and just not even try to listen or cooperate with you at all. But let them know that you mean business and lay down the rules. Let your students know how you plan on things to happen and that the only person who has control of the class is you. Doing all that will make your semester at the school a lot easier and make you a lot happier.

A Memorable Experience by Terri Law
As a senior in high school, I have experienced many difficult situations and dealt with complicated teachers. One of the most intricate situations I’ve experienced included a very difficult teacher. Approximately a year before I was actually enrolled in his class, I received a bad first impression. Although he was an authority, this teacher tended to give the impression of a student. I began to notice this characteristic towards the middle of my sophomore year. I attended class one day and we continued with our daily routine. My teacher saw me as a leader in the class and used me to influence or persuade other students to be respectful and give more effort. He then called me to his desk, but this visit was unusually different from most conversations. Once I approached his desk he began to speak to me about some of his students by name, but this time these students weren’t my classmates. He spoke negatively about them, and I’m sure he knew there wasn’t much I could do to influence this list of students. As time went on, these conversations got heavier. He began to name names, criticize, judge, and hold grudges toward these students. I would watch his interactions with these students. He would smile in their faces and talk about them behind their backs. A very shocking thing was revealed to me; my friend’s mother had a conference with this teacher. This parent is in my family and a very close companion to me. This family member informed me that my teacher gossiped about me during their conference. The more my teacher began to gossip the more respect I lost for him. It got worse as the year came to an end. All the students in his class knew about his secret thoughts. This unwise action caused my teacher to receive a bad reputation.
When I reflect on this situation, I’m grateful for this teacher. He taught me a lot about integrity. This teacher allowed me to understand the difference between authority, students, friends, and fakes. A teacher is an authority, not a friend. Schools are intended for a student to receive an education not to make friends and gossip, let alone with a teacher. I try to see the situation as a positive experience. I have always had integrity, but it has now been enhanced. I am more alert. I respect everyone, regardless of their differences which include characteristics, personality, and decisions. Everyone deserves second chances, so it’s best to forgive and forget. If I don’t agree with someone, I have enough respect for myself as well as them to approach them in a courteous manner and have a professional conversation to express myself. When people gossip, it just causes drama and the gossiper to be looked down upon. It’s best to be open and honest with everyone. When people lie, they are forced to tell more lies to cover up their first lie. Also, once trust is lost, it is very difficult for one to gain it back.
My advice to teachers would be to respect the boundaries set by natural age and take advantage of it. Let students be students and only students. Do not gossip with students, and keep your personal life issues to yourself. By doing this, you will silently persuade students to respect you as an authority, and although, they may not like your teaching techniques, they will have no reason to judge your personality in a negative way.

Advice for Teachers by Davis Bradberry
I honestly haven’t had many experiences with teachers outside of the norm. I’ve had great teachers, I think. Some students complain about teaching styles or the teachers grading methods but I honestly don’t have much to complain about. No matter how hard or unfair they seem, it’s only a matter of how motivated you are to succeed in the class. In class, I personally prefer lots of group projects and taking lots of notes. I’ve learned that in classes like that I feel more motivated and more relaxed. I don’t have a problem with strict teachers or teachers that give a lot a leeway. I think the classroom should be what the teacher makes it and the student should adapt. Adapting to your surroundings prepares you more for life after school. I hear too many students complaining about teachers who won’t let them text during class or they don’t allow food in the room. Getting upset over such trivial things is immature and having the mentality that you should be able to do what you want can only cause your reaction to authority to become worse, later in life.
I’ll admit that I’ve had teachers that weren’t necessarily my favorite. Whether it be their actual teaching or spiting them because of the subject of the class, I’ve never acted back at something I didn’t agree with or fought with their authority.
Teachers are here for us. They definitely aren’t here for the attention and they certainly aren’t here for the pay, they teach because they feel that’s what they were meant to do. Once they spend their time getting a further education, taking teaching assistant jobs and starting their teaching career, I think they deserve the right to teach their class just about however they want to. Classes in public school could be much worse.
Teachers usually know when they have made a mistake and the good ones will own up to it. They also will make changes to things when they recognize that the majority of their students are having a problem and that’s exactly how a teacher should be. Just from listening to other students compile their list of changes they would have made, I feel that there may be too much about a teachers rules or their discipline methods.
This semester is the first semester that I have fully enjoyed all of my classes. I’m enjoying them so much, I think, because of my teachers. They all seem very down to earth and they make class fun. They also seem to enjoy class…until a student cusses them out because of a tardy.
In class there’s only so far a teacher can go, freedom wise, and most students don’t understand that a lot of the rules teachers enforce aren’t necessarily the teachers. We can’t ask a teacher to not enforce the rules that their boss makes them enforce. I had a class where a teacher was so influenced by what her students wanted and what rules they didn’t want, that she was fired after only two years and honestly, I don’t feel I learned a lot in that class.
So, my advice to teachers would be to continue doing your job the way administrators have trusted you to do it. You’ll have students who will comply and of course some who won’t. Regard your student’s advice when there is a legitimate issue that could better the student, but only when the student is holding up their end of the bargain by trying their best with what you have already given them.

The Perfect Teacher by Tremayne Gresham
Teachers are very unique in ways but at the same time they are lame, too. All teachers have different styles and techniques for teaching, at least that’s what they tell you. Teachers get their teaching methods from the Board of Education. I think this just tells them the order to teach the different parts of the curriculum. Teachers should ask the student what they want to learn first and take it into consideration. The way teachers teach now is just pitiful. They give long assignments that usually don’t give students a chance to learn because you struggle with it and need help. Teachers should make sure that the assignments that they give are an exact example of what they have finished teaching. That way the practice will be helpful. Like in most students’ situations they are saying to themselves that they are not going to do the assignment because they did not have a full understanding. Other students think the same thing and at the same time, they are busy doing others things and don’t have time to do the assignment. When they have a chance to get it done, they can’t because they don’t understand and are constantly falling behind.
I think that teachers should start making more trivia game-like lessons so it will be more interesting. I have seen students come into class ready to listen but because the lesson is so boring they are asleep in 10 minutes. I have had the same thing happen to me and the lesson was so boring that it was impossible to stay awake. This is especially true in classes like history and government. A good suggestion for teachers when it comes to teaching government and history is to give assignments where we have to read and answer questions but the question have to be in the order that you read in. A lot of teachers take the time to plan these long and boring lessons and they expect you to listen and pay close attention. Yeah, we are supposed to so we will learn the material. The only reason that I can see why teachers plan lessons this way is because it is somewhat just like college only you are expected to sit and listen to boring lectures and take notes. College teachers shouldn’t teach that way.
The way that teachers teach is the reason why a lot of students are cheating but what kind of help is that when you can’t cheat your way through high school and eventually start to fail.
